Chards is an official partner of The Royal Mint. All our Royal Mint products are sourced directly from their mint headquarters in Llantrisant, Wales.
This set features three special designs: a two-pound coin commemorating the 300th anniversary of the Bank of England, a one-pound coin with the Lion of Scotland, and a fifty-pence piece marking the 50th anniversary of the Normandy landings on D-Day.
The set also includes five other circulating coins: 20 pence, 10 pence, 5 pence, 2 pence, and 1 penny, all bearing the original designs from Queen Elizabeth II's reign before the transition to the Royal Shield of Arms designs in 2008.
In 2008, the circulating definitive coin series underwent a transformation. Individual designs were replaced with a unified shield design across all denominations, conceived by Mathew Dent. The reverse designs of the 2008 Royal Mint Royal Shield of Arms Proof Set, when arranged correctly, depict the set's namesake, the Royal Shield of Arms.
See our 2008 UK annual coin proof sets, which were the first to feature the Royal Shield of Arms design.
Proof coins are specially produced to a much higher standard of finish. Originally, proof coins were intended as pre-production samples. As a printer would produce a small number of "proof" copies for checking and approval, so a mint would produce proofs for approval by the mintmaster, the monarch, and for other purposes.
When coin collecting began to become popular about two centuries ago, a larger number of proofs were sometimes made for sale to collectors.
The obverse of each coin in this set features the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, famously designed by Raphael Maklouf for official UK coinage.
The reverse designs will vary.
