This 2020 Guernsey gold proof 5 ounce coin was issued to commemorate the Battle of Britain, one of the Royal Air Force's greatest victories in WWII.
The proof coin comes encapsulated and housed in a presentation box, along with a certificate of authenticity. It is struck in 22 carat fine gold and contains 4.58 troy ounces of the precious metal.
This is coin 14 of only 20 issued.
The Battle of Britain was an air battle which took place between the fall of France in May 1940 and the cancellation of Operation Sea Lion (the planned invasion of Britain) in October 1940.
The British won the battle through a combination of superior tactics, the advantage of fighting on home-ground, greater aircraft production and of course, the bravery and skill of the RAF servicemen and women themselves. If the Battle of Britain had been won by the Germans, it is commonly perceived that they would have successfully invaded and occupied Britain, and causing Churchill to say after the battle that:
Never in the field of human conflict had so much been owed by so many to so few.
The obverse features the fourth definitive UK coin portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley and the inscription:
BAILIWICK OF GUERNSEY • 2020 • ELIZABETH II.
The coin features the top of a Spitfire in the centre and six more smaller Spitfires to the side. The inscription reads:
• BATTLE OF BRITAIN • SO MUCH, SO MANY, SO FEW • 80TH ANNIVERSARY.
The reverse was designed by Matt Tindal.
